For the second year in a row, we’re seeing exponential growth in the sale of access control across the global security industry. Through 2017 and 2016 access control has seen a higher rate of growth than CCTV systems or intruder alarms. This trend seems likely to continue through 2018.
It is likely that this method of physical security is becoming more popular due to the move to IP technology and the drive to improve product management and performance. Access control also allows for features and services such as biometric readers, identity management, increased protection of IP systems and wireless locking systems.

But how does this growth in popularity compare to the popularity of CCTV and video surveillance?
The video surveillance sector is still the largest in terms of physical security systems, dominating 55% of the market. This is due to a number of factors. CCTV acts as a great deterrent for criminals and trespassers and can act as evidence if a case ends up going to trial. This, coupled with the increasingly low prices of CCTV systems makes them much more accessible and, for many, better value for money.
Ultimately then, the best results for security can be achieved by integrating access control and CCTV. CCTV has been proven to be less of a deterrent when it is the only security system in place. Coupling it with other security solutions means that your business premises have a second line of defence in case of unauthorised persons trying to enter.
